Guruvayoor is a municipality in Thrissur and a business pilgrim town. It is located 25 km to the northwest of Thrissur city. Guruvayur is very much for its temple. This temple is may centuries old and among one of the most important temples in Kerala. Guruvayur temple is dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan in the form of Balgopalan. Entry to the temple is strictly restricted to non-hindus. Lord Guruvayurappan attracts so many strong believers from many religions. Temple administration runs by a Krishnattam Institute and Krishnattam Kali, a notable classical performing art, is performed. This art is instrumental in the initial stages of development of the famous dance-drama Kathakali that has a good base in Guruvayur. Guruvayur temple is also popular for two classical literacy works – Narayaneeyam by Melpathoor, Narayana Bhattathiri nad Jnanapparaby Poonthanam. Both of the authors are fervent believer of Guruvayurappam. Jnanappana is written in the native Malayalam. Guruvayur is a chief venue for the South Indian classical carnatic music. During the auspicious day of ekadashi, this music is played in the memory of legendary vocalist Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. This vocalist is also strict admirer of Guruvayurappan. In the Malayalam month of Kumbham, an annual festival is host by the temple. In this festival, the classical arts like Kathakali, Koodiyattam, Panchavadyam, Thayambaka and Panchari Melam are performed. It is a birth place of many famous percussionists of ethnic instruments like Chenda, Madalam, Timila, Ilathalam and Idakka. This temple is being run by the Guyruvayur Devaswom Management Committee under the directions of government of Kerala. Temporary members of the committee are nominated by the ruling party of Kerala from time to time and the permanent members are the current heads of the families of Chennas Mana, Samuthiri and Mallisseri Mana. Guruvayoor is also famous for the elephant sanctuary near the temple. The Jumbo elephants are trained here for temple. There are more than 60 elephants in the sanctuary. All elephants are offered by devotees of Lord Guruvayurappan. The leading elephant name is associated with the temple i.e. Guruvayur Kesavan, a legendary elephant. This temple is a major venue for marriages of Hindus in Kerala. Lord Guruvayurappan devotees find it very auspicious to start married life in front of the Lord. One can find so many pure vegetarian restaurants near the temple. Most of the restaurants offer good ghee roast dosa. Restaurants serve with mostly South Indian cuisine.
How To Reach
By Air
Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport situated 80 km from Guruvayoor. From Kozhikode, Guruvayoor is just 2 hours drive away by bus or car.
By Train
Take a train from Guruvayoor railway station. It is advised to take a train to Thrissur and then take a taxi costs Rs.300 to Guruvayur. Besides this, some overnight express train to Thiruvanathapuram and further to Chennai. Passenger trains are also available to Thrissur and Kochi.
By Bus
Bus service is available from Thrissur, Shaktan Thampuran bus stand for every few seconds. Bus service is also available from Ernakulam, North Paravur, Kottayam, Pathanamithitta, Pamba/Sabarimala, Palakkad, Mavelikkara, Kozhikode, Kodungallur and Thiruvanathapuram. Aana kota is located just 2 km from Guruvayur.
