Guruvayoor Temple is a famous pilgrimage in Thrissur District of Kerala. The temple is located in the town Guruvayoor in Thrissur district. This temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped here. Lord Krishna Idol is looking quite beautiful in its dignified posture. Only sight of the idol make you feel sacred and flawless. Lord idol is built by precious stone ‘Patala Anjana’. It is said that it was built by Guru and Vayu.
Lord Vishnu idol is displayed having four arms, bearing a conch, a discus (Sudarshana Chakra), a mace and a lotus. The idol is decorated with basil leaves (Tulsi) and rose garlands and pearl strings. Main temple walls are ornamented with impressive paintings of 17th century. These historic paintings are enhancing the beauty of the temple walls. The temple doors and the roof is coated with gold. Dhwajasthambam , a tall flag post, situated in front of the temple in the east. This flag post is 33 meters tall and completely covered with golden water. There is a Dipastambham, 7 meter high post of lamps, is just right to Dhwajsthambam. This Dipastambham has 13 circular receptacles on the top of each other that looks fascinating in the evening. Other Lord idols placed here other than Lord Vishnu is Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa and the Goddess Durga. Generally many weddings and Annaprasanam ceremony held here.
