Kannur is called “The Land of Looms and Lores” . It is a city and a municipality in Kannur district in Kerala state of South India. Kannur is the administrative headquarters of the Kannur district. It was known by the name Cannanore during British rule in India. Kannur is the largets city of the North Malabar. It is the fourth largest urban hub in Kerala having a population of 498,207 after Kochi, Thiruvanathapuram and Kozhikode. It is quite famous as a tourist spot of Kerala. Kannur is very important place from the military point of view. 62 military cantonment of the country are housed here and it is the current seat of the Defense Security Corps. It was an important port on the Arabian Sea. In the 12th and 13th century, Persia and Arabia used to trade from here. Till 1887, Kannur was also the British military headquarters on the west coast of India. In the 18th century, Kannur in alliance with Tellicherry city was the third largest city after Bombay and Karachi on the western coast of British India. Malayalam is the main language spoken in Kannur. English, Hindi and Tamil are some other languages easily understood and spoken by the people of Kannur. Kannur is the district headquarters of Kannur with Tellicherry city loc(21 km South), Thaliparamba city (20 km North), Payyannur(40 km North ), Mattannur(25 km East), Koothuparamba(22 km South East) and Chakarakkal (16 km South East). The Average literacy rate is 83% and 12% of the population is under the age of 6 years. St. Angelo Fort was constructed in 1505 by the first Portuguese viceroy of India Dom Francisco De Almeida but Dutch captured it in 1663 and then sold it to the Arakkal King in 1772. In 1790 British captured it and it was under british till 1947. Famous Kannur beach, Payyambalam Beach, has a coastline of few kilometers. One can see ships in transit along the Malabar coast from Calicut moving towards Mangalore, Goa and Bombay from the beach. Arakkal Museum is located in Ayikkara. This Museum is perfectly dedicated to the Arakkal family. This Arakkal family was the only Muslim royal family in Kerala of South India. Government of Kerala has established this museum in the durbar hall section of the Arakkalkettu(Arakal Palace). It was opened and managed by Arakkal Family Trust in July 2005. Another famous spot is the Cannanore Lighthouse near the Seaview Park. It is the first lighthouse built in 1843 by the British at St. Angelo’s Fort in Kannur. This lighthouse was renovated and moved to the current location in 1948 and it is still in use.
