Kerala Backwaters

Kerala, has a long chain of backwaters and lakes along the coastal belt. The largest backwater is the Vemba-nad lake connecting Alleppey to Cochin, a distance of 32.5 km. It is as wide as 5.63 km. It keeps engulfed an area of 202.25 sq.km. The Muvat-tupuzha, the Meenachil, the Manimala, the Pamba and the Achenkoil rivers get discharged into this lake. The water is saline. This lake assists in inland navigation and fishing. The banks of the lake are very fertile, eminently suited for coconut cultivation. Vaikkom, the great pilgrim centre is on its eastern bank. Boat races of tourist-potential at the Punnamada Kayal (Alleppey) and Kumarakam (Kot-tayam) are held in the waters of this lake.

Besides, smaller lakes are available in all parts of the state. Important lakes in south Kerala are the Kayamkulam and Ashtamudi lakes. In north Kerala lakes such as Kumbla, Kalnad, Bekal and Chittari and Kavvai are the most prominent. The major fresh water lake in Kerala is the Sasthamcottah lake in the Quilon district. Other fresh water lakes include the Vellayani (Trivandrum) and those in the Trichurs district. The Periyar lake, which is part of the wild life sanctuary at Thekkadi, was been a centre of attraction for tourists.

Backwaters is the major attraction for tourists in Kerala. Adhered to the coastline, a network of innumerable streams, tributaries, canals, ponds, deltas, lakes and estuaries along the side of the Arabian Sea coast(Malabar Coast) in Kerala. This dense network consists of five large lakes connected to canals by 38 rivers. Vembanad lake, the largest lake, is stretched over three districts Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam namely covering an area of about 205 sq. km.in Kerala. Ashatmudi, the second largest lake, envelops one third of Kollam town. It is the great entry point to the Kerala backwaters.

Earlier, these waterways were used to transport goods and people but now-a-days backwaters become the alluring tourist destination. Kollam
Kollam is the starting point of the backwater ways. Kollam was founded in the year 825 AD when the Malyalam calendar starts. The Ashtamudi Kayal, second largest lake, covers 30% of Kollam, known as the gateway to the backwaters in Kerala. There is Thangasseri Fort situated near Kollam, 71 km north of Thiruvanathapuram. Kollam is one of the leading trade centres of the ancient world in Kerala. You can enjoy 8 hours boat ride from Kollam to Alappuzha here. It is the longest cruise in Kerala.

Kuttunad
Ample area covered with bright green paddy fields divided by embankments in Kuttunad. There is a high level of water than the neighboring lands. Kumarakom

Kasargod
Situated in the North Kerala, Kasargod – dazzling backwater destination, has the Arabian Sea to the west and the western ghats to the north and east. It is famous for rice cultivation, coir processing and lovely landscape. Kasargod backwaters are formed by flowing 4 rivers into it. You can see birds on the small islands near the backwater stretches. There are two options – Chandragiri and Valiyaparamba – available for cruising in Kasargod. Chandragiri is located 4 km to the southwest of Kasargod and takes you to the historic Chandragiri Fort. Valiyaparamba is apicturesque backwater located near Kasargod.

Thiruvallam
Thiruvallam is located 6 km from Thiruvanathapuram, the capital of Kerala. It is well known for its canoe rides among tourists. Two rivers, the Killi and the Karamana, flows into this backwater. There are water sports facilities, a water park and a floating bridge are provided at Veli Lagoon near Thiruvallam. Boat cruises on Akkulam Lake also attracts tourists to come to Thiruvallam. Kozhikode
