Kozhikode, earlier called Calicut, is among the major cities of Kerala, India. It was the capital of the Malabar when Zamorins were ruling before the British Rule. Vasco Da Gama had landed on the remote beach Kappad, 18 km from Calicut. Kozhikode is quite famous for this. It is the third largest city having 436,556 population as per 2001 census and maximum urban concentration. Kozhikode was among the major trading spot of eastern spices and tagged as city of spices. The best time to visit Kozhikode is in the month of December and January when the sky is quite clear and the air is fresh and cool. The highest recorded temperature is 39.4oC and the lowest recorded temperature is 14 oC round the year till yet. The humidity level rises with hot weather during March to May. It is a vital trading port in the Indian Ocean. Kozhikode is a home of religious diversity. Most of the people are Hindus next the Muslims and then the Christians. One can visit temples blessed with Bhadrakali, Ayyappam, Hanuman and Garuda. The people of Kozhikode have so much faith in serpent worship and do it regularly. The muslims in Kozhikode are called Mappilas with the majority of Sunnis who used to follow the Shafi school of thought. In 52 AD, the Christianity is popularized and Christians have moved to the hilly area of the Kozhikode district from Travancore and Cochin.
How To Reach
By Air
There is a international airport which is well connected to Bombay by Jet Airways and Indian Airlines/Air India on daily basis. Most of the airlines has provided its service to this airport. As you reach at Kochi International Airport, you can take a train or flight to reach Kozhikode conveniently. Kingfisher Airlines has launched its daily flights to Trivandrum/ Kochi and Calicut some time ago. From Dubai and UAE, you can fly daily through Emirates Airlines.
By Train
One can take a train from Kochi, Thiruvanathapuram, Coimbatore, Chennai, Mangalore, Bangalore, Bombay, New Delhi, Kolkata to reach at Kozhikode. There are four direct trains from Chennai to Kozhikode which take about 12 to 18 hours for one way. Direct train from Bombay to Calicut via Konkan Railway Station takes 24 hrs to cover. Bombay is 1200km away from Calicut. Gastronomists like famous Malabar cuisine. Malabar Moppila Biriyanis is a must eat here. Mussels are really liked among seafood. Local cuisine, Meat curries and Desserts, has a great influence of the Arab.
By Bus
There is a bus service available from Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvanathapuram, Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore to reach at Kozhikode.
