Kumarakom is located in the Kottayam district of Kerala in South India. It is a bunch of tiny islands in and around the “Vembanad Backwaters”. Kumarakom is well known for its dense greenery. There are numerous coconut trees lined up that add aura to the green surroundings of Kumarakom. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the main highlight of this place. There are numerous species of birds come here for some time and move to other places afterwards. Prominent migratory bird species include Siberian Crane. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is stretched across an area of 15 acres and comes under the Govt. of Kerala. There is abundance of diverse kinds of Shrimp, Prawn and freshwater fish. “Pearl Spot” fish is noticed very few in numbers. One can visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary by Canoes. Local fishermen can organize Canoes for you. It is a cheap trip to visit the Sanctuary. Avoid it in the sunny afternoon instead try it in the morning or evening. A private sailing club is situated on the Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom.
