Malampuzha is a mini hydro-electric project built over Malampuzha river in Palakkad district of the state Kerala in south India. It is the biggest irrigation project in Kerala. It is large network of canals in the Malampuzha district. Malampuzha Dam is the biggest irrigation reservoir in Kerala. I is celebrating its Golden Jubilee Year in October starting with Tourism week and Onam festival celebrations in the month of September. Malampuzha district becomes famous because of the Malampuzha Dam. Paddy is cultivated in 50,000 acres(200 km2 ) in the two seasons by using waters from the Malampuzha Dam, making Palakkad the ‘rice bowl of Kerala’. Malampuzha Garden and reservoir are fantasticly built in the forest hills of western ghats forming the backdrop and give you a nice example of scenic beauty. This makes Malampuzha district one of the foremost tourist spot in the state. The dam is built across Malampuzha district having a total length of 2,069m. There is a Mansory has a length of 1,849m and the Earthen dam have a length of 220m. Dam Catchment area is 147.63 km2 with a storage capacity of 236.69m3 . The dam has complete reservoir level of 115.06(375.5 ft) with a storage at FRL of 226mm3 . Malampuzha Dam is constructed by the Madras Government in 1914. At that time, Palakkad was the part of Madras Presidency. Its foundation stone was laid by the Public Works Minister, K. Bhaktavalsalam, in March 1949 and the chief minister K. Kamaraj inaugaurated it on October 9, 1955. When the construction of the dam did not take place, this place was called as Punnpara, Chovankadu, Iduppady, Vadukampadam, Thanjikapallam, Karakkad, Thampurattypotta, Aanamukkara, Pandipotta, Thekkumpadam and Koshavan Idukku. This dam is considered as a multi-purpose project for irrigation, drinking, industries, power generation, fish farming and water transport purposes. There are some other tourist attractions too. These are Malampuzha Gardens, Rope Way, Snake Park, Rock Garden and the aquarium. A large cement structure in the Malampuzha Gardens is Yakshi built by the famous sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. An amusement park and a fantasy park is also located just 2 km from Malampuzha Dam.
