Munnar, a beautiful hill station, is situated in the Idukki district of Kerala. Munnar is just a small part of the Idukki district located in the South India’s western Ghats. Munu and aaru words are arrived from Tamil and Malayalam language which together constitute the Word “Munnar”. Munu means three and aaru means rivers, is defining the location of the town which is situated at the convergence of the three rivers namely Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers. It is located just 1600-1800m above sea level. Munnar pertains to government of Kerala. Munnar is surrounded by dense forests and continued to be wet and dry mostly during the year. Tea plantations, sinuous roads, high peaks for trekking and nice accommodation facilities at Munnar make it a popular tourist spot. The culture of Munnar is fusion of both Kerala and the nearby state Tamil Nadu. Munnar’s fresh and hygienic air is quite good for vigour and vitality of the body. The temperature of Munnar ranges from -5oC to 10oC in winter and In Summer season, it varies from 15oC to 25oC. Best time to visit here is between the month of August to the month of May. Munnar is quite famous for its tea plantations among tourists and it is also called Tea town of the state. As there are so many protected areas present near Munnar, diverse native and endangered species can be found here. It includes Nilgiri Thars, the Grizzled Giant Squirrel, the Nilgiri Wood pigeon, Elephant, the Gaur, the Sambar etc. A rare Neela kurinji flower is also found here. It is a blue flower which flourished only once in twelve years. Munnar is a perfect gateway for honeymooners. The highest peak of South India, Anamudi is situated in Munnar.
How To Get There:
By Car:
From Kochi, Munnar is 140 km away and it takes 6 hrs drive to reach at Munnar. One can enjoy the nice drive on the way to Kothamangalam which is 80 km from Munnar. Stimulating waterfalls and view of the forest on the way make your visit more happening. Adimali is 30 km from Munnar but still it takes an hour to reach at Munnar. Before 22 km from Munnar, one can see the view of the tea plantation on both sides and this view becomes more enjoying during early in the morning.
Coimbatore is 150 km and Kodiakanal is 170 km from Munnar.
By Bus
Munnar bus stand is situated on the main street. Bus service is available at Kochi and takes about 41/2 hours. You can also take bus from Coimbatore too.
