The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the southeast corner of the western ghats. It is spread over over an area of 128 km2 (49.4 sq mi). It was declared as a sanctuary in 1958 but the conservation of wildlife started after 1985 when a separate wildlife wing was setup. Agasthyamalai peak at an elevation of 1868 m is an important landmark.

Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is covered with natural vegetation. There are 39 species of mammals including Tiger, Leopard, Sloth bear, Elephant, Sambar, Barking Deer, Bonnet Macaque, Nilgiri Langur and Nilgiri Tahr, 176 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles, 17 species of amphibians and 40 species of fishes. This diverse flora makes it an ideal wildlife reserve. 44 mugger crocodiles live in a crocodile farm. It is setup in 1977 at Neyyar. The Steve Trwin Crocodile Rehabilitation And Research Centre was inaugurated in May 2007. The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary facilities visit to the lion park and boat on the Neyyar Lake to the tourists.
