Palakkad is the land of Palmyras and Paddy fields. It is located near the Palghat Gap, a pass or natural depression through the western ghats ranges. These western ghat ranges are running parallel to the west coast of India. Palakkad is a town and a municipality in Kerala state in Southern India. It is the administrative headquarters of Palakkad district. It links Kerala to the plains of Tamil Nadu State towards the East.It is just 50 km away from Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu. Palakkad is the northern district of Kerala spread over an area of 4,480 km2 . It has population of 2,617,072 according to census 2001. Palakkad is generally called the Gateway of Kerala. High mountains, forests, fertile valleys, rivers and streams with the richness of flora and fauna make it a tourist spot of Kerala. The popular tourist spot, Malampuzha is just 8 km from Palakkad. Palakkad is very famous among tourists and have Tippu’s Fort, Malampuzha Garden, Snake Park, Aquarium, Rope Way, Rock Garden, Lok nayak J.P. Smrithi Vanem and Deer Park, Mayilladumpara – Cholanoor Peacock Sanctaury, Kanhirapuzha Dam, Mangalam Dam, Pothundy Dam, Seetharkundu Waterfallls near Nelliyampathy, Meenkara Dam. The Nellikulangara Temple is 28 km from Palakkad. Tripallavoor Siva Temple is located at Pallavur just 20 km from Palakkad and Kakkayur Siva Temple is situated at Kakkayur just 15 km from Palakkad.

Palakkad is very well connected through railway to all major cities in India such as Hyderabad, Kozhikode, Mangalore, Kochi, Thiruvanathapuram, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. It is one of the Railway divisional headquarters and has the office of the Divisional Railway Manager of Palakkad Division.

You can arrive here by bus from all major cities such as Kozhikode, Mangalore, Kochi, Bangalore, Thiruvanathapuram, Chennai, Mumbai, Coimbatore. There are no direct bus service to and from Hyderabad.

Palakkad is very well connected by roads to major cities of India. NH 47 and NH 213 connects Palakkad to Bangalore, Kanyakumari, Kozhikode. NH 213 highway passes through the district. The road network of Palakkad connects it to the other cities like Chennai, Kozhikode, Ooty, Palani, Kodaikanal, Kochi, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Madurai.
