Pathanamithitta word is borrowed from two Malayalam words Pathanam and Thitta which unitedly means “houses by the riverside”. The town is located on the productive banks of the river Achankovil. It is touching the Alappuzha district on west, Kottayam and Idukki districts on north, Kollam district on south and Tamil Nadu on east. Pathanamithitta is the gateway to the world notable Pilgrim Centre Sabarimala. Having a tropical climate, the town receives monsoon showers in the month of June. Pathanamithitta town is blessed with bountiful nature having lush green plains, splendid waterfalls, woods and sky touching mountains. Konni is a village located 11 km from Pathanamithitta town. It is one of the must see places of Pathanamithitta town. Acres of dense forest is a home to wild animals is a popular tourist spot, Konni, perfect for safaris and trekking. Animals living here makes the safari more interesting. Enjoy amazing view of the hilltop while trekking. Another popular tourist place is Perunthenaruvi Waterfalls, located 15 km from Pathanamithitta town. It is situated on the western ghats of the Sahyadari range. This place is quite famous for the waterfalls there.

Kochi International Airport is located 142 km, Thiruvanathapuram International Airport is 113 km from the Town. One more airport located near to the Pathanamithitta town is Kozhikode Airport. One can alternatively reach to Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi or other Indian cities and then board the train to Pathanamithitta town.

Pathanamithitta is very well connected by railway to the other parts of India. There is Tiruvalla Railway Station located 30 and chengannur Railway Station located 26 km in the district. Bus service is available from the arrival gate of Chengannur Railway Station in every 2 minutes.
