Periyar is located on the north of the Tamil Nadu state. It is bordered by Karnataka state and river Palar also travels for long distance in Periyar. It is bounded by Namakkal and Karur districts to the east, Dindigal district to the south, Coimbatore to the west and Nilgiri district. Periyar is the only district having no coast of its own. Its climate remain mainly dry all year with a little rainfall. One can expect some rainfall only in monsoon. Only Sullithottam and Bhavani taluks records high rainfall in Periyar. Only January and February seems delightful. From March, temperature starts rising and rose to the highest level in May when some drizzling don’t give much relief. In June and August, temperature starts getting better and in September, rain starts but in scanty volume. North east monsoon emerges during October – November. In December, climate becomes soothing and clear.
How To Reach
Periyar District is well combined with all means of transport except Air. By train and road, it is well approachable from Chennai and other districts. Interstate Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation provides bus service in and out of the district. Coimbatore Airport is the nearest airport, 75 km (52 miles) by road and five accessible waterways are also available in the district.
