Thekkady, known as Tiger Reserve, is located in the central Kerala in South India. The alluring beauty of Thekkady lies in the dense forest, rich vegetation and the quiet countryside. It is located nearby to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border town-Kumily. Thekkady is approx. 257 km (160 miles) from Trivandrum, 114 km from Madurai Airport, 185 km from Cochin International Airport and 114 km from Kottayam Railway Station. The sanctuary is surrounded by the artificial lake. This lake is 24 sq. km large formed by dam crossing the Periyar river. Its salubrious climate make the visit more exotic and unique. It is a popular tourist spot in India. This sanctuary is located 60 km from Idukki, 190 km from Cochin, and 114 km from Kottayam. Although it is open throughout the year, the best time to visit is from September to March here. Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary is very mush famous for its thisk evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist short-lived forests and savanna grass lands. Elephants, Sambar, Tigers, Gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Niligiri Langurs can be seen living here. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is stretched across an area of 777 km2 (300 sq. miles). Only 360 km2 (139 sq. miles) area has thick evergreen forest out of the total area of the sanctuary. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Herds of elephants coming down in the lake looks quite beautiful at the Sanctuary. Abundant natural spices like Black Pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon and Clove, are present here. One can find variety of invertebrates here. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a home to 62 species of mammals, 27 species of amphibians and 38 species of fishes. Soft hills, lush green trees, twitting birds and scenic landscapes are present a picture of beautiful Thekkady to you which is a treat to the eyes. The sanctuary is quite famous for tea, coffee and pepper plantations. The air is filled with the exotic aroma of the species. One can also experience a cruise along the Periyar river to enthrall himself during the visit to Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary.
