Thrissur is located in the central Kerala, South India. Thrissur is also the headquarters of the district. It is known as the “Cultural Capital” of Kerala. As a significant cultural centre of Kerala, Thrissur city celebrates the Pooram Festival and the city is quite famous for this colourful festival. Vadakkumnathan Temple is always being the venue for this Thrissur Pooram Festival. This festival is held in the month of April or May. There is also a festival, Pulikali during Onam celebrations, is also celebrated in Vadakkumnathan Temple. Pulikali is celebrated during the month of August or September. Thrissur is located around a hillock atop which is Vadakkumnathan Temple. This temple is devoted to the Lord Shiva. There are large number of well known temples that includes Thiruvambady Temple, Vadakkumnathan Temple and Paramekkavu Temple and two churches – the Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral and the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours is the biggest in South Asia. Thrissur is well known for festivals, religious and historical sights. Scenic landscapes also caught the eyes of the tourists here. As a best shopping center, it is also known for silks and Gold ornaments. Thrissur prevails a tropical climate as it is located in the south western coastal state of Kerala state. It is best to visit in the month of October to February in the Thrissur city. Summer season duration is from March to May succeeded by south west monsoon which stays from June to September. South west monsoon usually starts setting in the last week of May month. The climate does not vary much in the summer and winter season. Generally Maximum average temperature in summer stays to 35oC and the minimum average temperature is 22.5 oC. In winter season, the maximum average temperature is 32.3 oC and the minimum average temperature is 20 oC. The rainfall decreases after the month of July. The average rainfall is 3,159 mm. There are average 124 rainy days annually.
