Varkala is situated 40 km north of Trivandrum in Kerala, India. Famous Papanasam beach is located at Varkala. Varkala is the only place having cliffs touching the Arabian Sea in the south of Kerala. This is the only geological feature in the flat shores of Kerala and Geologists used to call it as Varkala formation. These cliffs have a number of water streams flowing on the sides. Varkala is famous for its picturesque beaches away from throng of people at affordable prices. Visiting Varkala during the season time is considered as best time when the beach broaden itself for 500m around the cliff face. The beaches really get crowded and becomes costly from the starting of December to the February. After this period, the crowd starts getting lesser and the beaches becomes calm to relax in the peaceful abode. It is quite new place developed as a tourist destination in the last 8 years. 900 years old Janardana Swami Temple is a popular vaishnavaik shrine located in Varkala. This shrine is known as Dakshin Kashi means Benaras of south, situated besides Papanasam beach. It is believed that its holy water wash away the sins and also an important ayurvedic centre. There is another benchmark, Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. One of the famous monument of Kerala is Sree Narayana Guru’s mausoleum on the top of the hill in Varkala. One can play cricket, volleyball/football on the beach after 4 pm.

By Car
You can reach Varkala by car as it is connected by state and national highways to all major cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
By Air
The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport. From there, you can take a train or bus to reach Varkala.
By Bus
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation provides its bus service from Trivandrum and from Varkala to the South Kerala and Kanyakumari.
By Train
Varkala is very well connected by rail network. If you are coming from Trivandrum and Cochin, it is quite convenient to take a train to Varkala. After reaching at Varkala Railwya Station, you can take a taxi or autorickshaw to reach at Papanasam beach. The beach is 5 km away from Varkala Railway Station and the autorickshaw charges can vary from Rs. 40-50.
