Wayanad district is a hill station located in the north-east of Kerala. Wayanad word is borrowed from “Vayal Nadu” country of paddy fields. It is formed 12th district of the state Kerala in 1920 by picking up areas from Kozhikode and Kannur district. Kalpetta is the only municipal town and the district headquarter in the Wayanad district. Earlier this region was called Maykshetra i.e. Maya’s land.  Wayanad is located on the southern top of the Deccan plateau. Western ghats having dense jungles, deep valleys and rocky territory is a chief attraction of the district. Almost whole area is covered by forest and greenery but the progressing exploitation of the natural resources is indicating an inevitable environmental crisis. As the district is covered with forest with mean sea level, the climate is quite cool throughout the year. The humidity level is from 74-95%. The temperature usually varies between 18oC to 28 oC. The summer season is from March to May having maximum temperature of 35oC. During winter, minimum temperature is 10 oC from December to February. The south-west monsoon comes during June to September and the north-east monsoon comes during October to November. It is quite popular for spectacular beauty, wildlife and traditions.
